EquiShure is appropriate for all horses at risk of suffering from subclinical acidosis. At-risk horses often express one or more signs that can derail athletic performance as well as reduce growth or reproductive potential. Signs of subclinical acidosis include decreased feed intake or complete inappetence in severe cases, mild to moderate colic signs of unexplained origin, poor feed efficiency and subsequent weight loss, loss of performance, and development of certain vices such as wood chewing, weaving, and stall walking. Subclincial acidosis is caused by the overloading of the hindgut with easily digestible carbohydrates in the form large meals of grain or overconsumption of pasture grasses rich in fructan. As the hindgut becomes overwhelmed with these carbohydrates, the profile of the resident bacterial population changes, resulting in a decrease in pH. When pH significantly drops, signs of subclinical acidosis develop. Using scientific studies conducted at KER and other research institutions, KER has produced EquiShure, a time-released hindgut buffer designed specifically for the horse. EquiShure minimizes fluctuations in pH when significant quantities of easily digestible carbohydrates are offered.
